Monday Musings 10.20

Back to regular scheduled programming as I missed last week due to a much needed rest, but I’ve been watching all the sportsball. Let’s dive in.

MLB: Dodgers Dynasty Mode Activated

The Dodgers are the Yankees of the late ’90s/early ’00s. Fans are even calling them the Evil Empire, a moniker once attributed to the New York bombers.

Dynasties, like low-cut jeans, are back in fashion and LA is on trend. The Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Milwaukee Brewers in four straight games to punch their ticket to the World Series for the third time in five years. Shohei Ohtani is truly a once-in-a-generation player. In case you missed it, he started Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, struck out 10 batters through six innings, and smashed three home runs as the DH. Insane, historic numbies!

The Dodgers’ sustained and overpowering success has some owners questioning baseball’s lack of a salary cap—the sport’s unique defining quality. This sort of talk was happening when the Yankees were dominating back in the day. Speaking of which, the Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series, cutting another postseason short. I’ve been saying it for years, but please fire Boone, someone, please. He already has a background in broadcasting—he doesn’t need this job, and he’s not good at it anymore. Changes need to be made.

The Blue Jays won last night against the Seattle Marines, forcing the best thing in all of sports — Game 7. One team will advance to the World Series to face the Goliath Dodgers. Whoever wins will have to put up a mighty David fight to beat them. I think either American League team can do it. My head wants the Blue Jays, but my heart wants the Mariners. Shoutout Jacob! If the Blue Jays go, it could be a rematch of USA vs. Canada à la the NHL Rivalry Series this past year.

NFL: Packers Survive Desert Scare

My Green Bay Packers eked out another win yesterday against the Arizona Cardinals. The desert birds almost had our number, but the defense saved the Cheeseheads. Multiple sacks and holding them to 23 points while the offense barely hung on to win 27–23. Jordan Love and the offense aren’t looking too hot. Their 4-1-1 record tells a different story than what’s been happening on the field. Also, does anyone else think the vibes are off a bit with head coach Matt LaFleur?

F1: Verstappen Dominates in Texas

Deep in the heart of Texas—actually on the outskirts in Austin. Wheels up and hook ’em horns. Max Verstappen, aka the Dutch Lion, still can’t be stopped, and I just want the boys in papaya to win already. McLaren has been so close all season, showing flashes of brilliance, but they can’t seem to break through when it matters most. The Circuit of the Americas delivered another thrilling race weekend, but Verstappen’s perennial dominance continues to be the story of the 2025 season. At this point, it feels like the Dodgers over here.

Hockey: Oilers Looking Dangerous Early

Edmonton is looking good, and I feel great having Connor McDavid back. It’s finally cold enough to wear sweaters (what they call jerseys in hockey) and cozy up with a beer and a good game of hockey. Winter is coming, and so are the Oilers. My mom is Canadian, so my allegiance is allowed.

Also heard the Rangers can’t score at home. What’s up with that?

Cheers,

Sarah
