Monday Musings

Another wild weekend of sports is in the books. This time my Packers tied, the U.S. lost on home soil, and the baseball playoffs are set. Let’s get into it.

Packers-Cowboys Deliver an Instant Classic

In a game that had everything except a winner, the Packers and Cowboys battled to a rare 40-40 tie on Sunday. The scoreboard operator barely had time to breathe as these NFC powerhouses traded haymakers all night. Is Dak Prescott back? The numbers certainly suggest so. Meanwhile, Micah Parsons managed to notch a sack in what many were calling his “revenge game.” Both teams will be kicking themselves over missed opportunities, but at least it’s not a loss.

Ryder Cup: European Celebration on American Soil

The Europeans reclaimed the Ryder Cup in dramatic fashion at Bethpage Black, a venue that lived up to its reputation for rowdy crowds and challenging play. Between the colorful language, contentious rulings, and pressure-packed putts, this Ryder Cup had everything a golf fanatic could want. The real breakout star? Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who channeled his inner McGregor with passionate celebrations that would make UFC fans blush.

New York’s notoriously tough crowds crossed the line from passionate to problematic at times — Erica McIlroy, wife of legendary golfer Rory McIlroy, had a beer thrown on her, making the Waste Management Phoenix Open galleries look tame by comparison. As Derek Jeter and Eli Manning could tell you, playing in New York comes with unique challenges — even when you’re the home team.

MLB Playoff Picture: Predictions on the Line

The marathon 162-game MLB season has finally crossed the finish line, and it’s time for some accountability on our preseason World Series predictions:

  • Sarah: Yankees vs. Phillies
  • Roni: Royals vs. Dodgers
  • Liv: Mariners vs. Phillies
  • Conor: Red Sox vs. Diamondbacks ❌
  • Missy: Yankees vs. Dodgers ✓
  • Derek: Red Sox vs. Phillies

Pour one out for Roni and Conor, whose Royals and Diamondbacks dreams have been dashed. The rest of us are looking pretty smart right about now. My Yankees-Phillies prediction could give us a 2009 World Series rematch, but I’m increasingly intrigued by the Mariners’ chances. Shoutout Liv. Cal Raleigh is launching baseballs into orbit, and Seattle has that magical October aura that sometimes matters more than regular-season statistics.

Bottom Line

Autumn is officially here — the most wonderful time of the year for sports fans. Playoff baseball tension, football drama hitting its stride, and perfect weather for rocking your favorite team hoodie. Grab a hard cider, settle into your couch, and enjoy the ride.

Cheers,

Sarah
